My research interests:

  • Galaxy formation and co-evolution with their central supermassive black holes;
  • Galaxy morphology and structure;
  • Data reduction pipeline for Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST);

Topic I:  Multi-wavelength studies of hyper-luminous, dust-obscured quasars at cosmic noon

  • Hot dust-obscured galaxies (thereafter, Hot DOGs) have been recently discovered in Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) All-Sky Survey. Following the predictions by the mainstream model of galaxy formation and evolution, Hot DOGs have been suggested to locate in the transition phase between sub-millimeter galaxies and quasars at high redshift. They are good candidates for studying the co-evolution between massive galaxies and their central supermassive black holes. Combined our ALMA, VLT, JCMT, P200, EVN/VLBA observations with HST, SDSS, WISE and Herschel archival data, we study the physical properties (morphology, stars, atomic and molecular gas, dust…) and environments of Hot DOGs. A series of our works have been or will be published (Fan et al., 2016a, 2016b, 2017, 2018a, 2018b, 2019).

Topic II:  Galaxy morphology and structure

With the high-resolution images of HST, my interests are to study:

  • morphological classification, especially by employing the machine learning (ML) technology in the Big Data era;
  • the origin of Hubble sequence;
  • the evolution of galactic structure and its dependence on other properties;
  • the morphology and structure of AGN;

In the near future, the new space telescope, such as China Space Station Telescope (CSST), EUCLID (Europe, ESA) and Roman Space Telescope (USA, NASA),  will raise both the huge chances and challenges to the studies of galaxy morphology and structure.
